Florida Auto Insurance — What You Need to Know
Florida's Minimum Requirements
Florida requires $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). However, these minimums leave you dangerously underprotected. We strongly recommend adding Bodily Injury Liability (BI) coverage.
Uninsured Drivers Are Everywhere
Florida consistently ranks among the top states for uninsured drivers — nearly 1 in 5 drivers has no insurance. Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage protects you and your family if you're hit by someone with no policy.
Factors That Affect Your Rate
Your premium is based on your driving record, age, zip code, vehicle type, credit score, and coverage selections. South Florida tends to have higher rates due to traffic density and weather risk — which is exactly why shopping multiple carriers matters.

Auto insurance by city and by situation
Every page below covers a specific city or a specific filing requirement. Pick the one that matches what you are dealing with rather than reading all of them.
Car and auto insurance by city
We keep a separate page per city and per term, because the two searches are asking different things: a “car insurance” page is built to get you a price on the vehicle in your driveway, while an “auto insurance” page walks through what each coverage actually pays for before you pick limits.
SR-22 filings by city
An SR-22 is a certificate your carrier files with the state to prove financial responsibility. It attaches to a policy — it is not a policy you buy on its own.
High-risk and court-ordered filings (Miami market)

What Florida requires, and what it leaves uncovered
The state minimums are a registration requirement. This is what each coverage does and what it costs you to skip.
| Coverage | Required in Florida? | What it pays for | What happens without it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Injury Protection (PIP) | Yes — $10,000 (Fla. Stat. 627.736) | 80% of your own medical bills and 60% of lost wages after a crash regardless of fault, plus a $5,000 death benefit. | You cannot register a vehicle in Florida, and nothing pays first on your own injuries. |
| Property Damage Liability (PDL) | Yes — $10,000 (Fla. Stat. 324.022) | Damage you cause to someone else’s vehicle or property. | Same registration problem, plus you personally owe for the damage you caused. |
| Bodily Injury Liability (BI) | No — not required of most private passenger drivers | Injuries you cause to other people, and your legal defense if you are sued. | You pay out of pocket for the other driver’s injuries. This is the largest uncovered exposure most Florida drivers carry. |
| Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) | No | Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no bodily injury coverage, or not enough of it. | Because Florida does not require BI, plenty of drivers carry none — so UM is often the only thing standing behind your own injuries. |
| Collision | No — unless a lender requires it | Repair or replacement of your own vehicle after a collision, including one you caused. | You absorb your own repair bill. |
| Comprehensive | No — unless a lender requires it | Theft, fire, hail, falling objects, flooding and storm damage to your own vehicle. | Hurricane or flood damage to your car is not paid by any liability coverage. |
Florida did not repeal no-fault. Bills proposing a 25/50/10 liability framework in place of PIP — HB 1181 and SB 1256 of the 2025 session — both died in committee on June 16, 2025, so PIP remains required under Fla. Stat. 627.736. The $10,000/$20,000 bodily injury and $10,000 property damage figures under Fla. Stat. 324.021(7) apply to drivers who must prove financial responsibility, such as SR-22 filers.
Understanding Florida auto coverage before you choose limits
Florida’s minimums are a registration requirement, not a protection plan
The two coverages Florida actually requires — $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of property damage liability — exist so the state will let you put a tag on a car. They were never sized to cover what a serious crash costs. PIP pays a percentage of your own bills up to ten thousand dollars, and property damage liability pays for the other person’s bumper, not their broken arm.
The gap that surprises people is bodily injury liability. Florida does not require most private passenger drivers to carry any. If you injure someone and you have no BI coverage, the claim does not disappear — it follows you personally. That is also why uninsured motorist coverage matters more here than in states that mandate liability limits: a meaningful share of the cars around you are carrying nothing that would pay for your injuries.
What actually moves your premium
Two neighbors with the same car can be quoted very differently, and it is rarely one single factor. Carriers weigh the vehicle itself, how far and how often you drive it, your claims and violation history, how long you have held continuous coverage, who else lives in the household and may drive, and the limits and deductibles you select.
Continuous coverage is the one people underestimate. A lapse of even a few weeks can change which carriers will write you and at what tier, long after the lapse is over. If you are between policies, that is worth mentioning up front so we are comparing accurately rather than optimistically.
- Vehicle year, make, model and safety features
- Annual mileage and whether the car is used for work
- Driving record, including at-fault accidents and moving violations
- How long you have carried continuous coverage, and any lapses
- Every licensed driver in the household, whether or not they are on the policy
- The limits, deductibles and optional coverages you choose
SR-22 and FR-44 are filings, and they are not interchangeable
An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility your insurer transmits to the state. Under Fla. Stat. 324.021(7) the underlying limits are $10,000 bodily injury per person, $20,000 per accident, and $10,000 property damage. How long you must keep it in force depends on the authority that ordered it, so treat any promise of a fixed term with suspicion until your own order is read.
An FR-44 is the DUI version and it is a different animal. Under Fla. Stat. 324.023, a driving-under-the-influence conviction under Fla. Stat. 316.193 on or after October 1, 2007 requires $100,000 bodily injury per person, $300,000 per accident and $50,000 property damage — ten times the bodily injury requirement of an SR-22 — and Florida sets a three-year minimum period. Being told you need “an SR-22” when the conviction was a DUI is a common and expensive mix-up.
What to have ready when you ask for a quote
Accurate quoting takes about five minutes if the information is in front of you. Guessed details are the main reason a quoted price and a bound price end up different, so it is worth gathering these first.
- Driver’s license number for every driver you want on the policy
- Year, make, model and VIN for each vehicle
- Your current declarations page, if you have coverage now
- Dates and general details of any accidents or tickets in the last few years
- The garaging address, which is where the car actually sits overnight
- Any court or DMV paperwork if a filing is involved
Auto Insurance FAQ
How much can I really save by switching?
Savings depend entirely on your current policy, your driving record, your vehicle, and the coverage you choose — we can't promise a specific amount. Because we compare multiple carriers, we can show you what's available side-by-side, which is especially worth doing if you haven't shopped your policy in over a year.
Do you handle SR-22 and FR-44 filings?
Absolutely. We work with multiple carriers that specialize in SR-22 and FR-44 filings. We can often get you covered the same day and file the paperwork with the state on your behalf so your license can be reinstated as quickly as possible.
Is the quote really free? What's the catch?
There's no catch. Our service is 100% free to you with zero obligation. We earn a small commission from the insurance carrier only if you decide to purchase a policy. You'll never pay us a fee.
How fast will I hear back after submitting the form?
We typically respond within 1 hour during business hours, and often much faster. If you need immediate coverage, call us directly and we can usually get you quoted and covered while you're on the phone.
Can you insure multiple vehicles or drivers?
Yes! Multi-car and multi-driver policies are one of the best ways to save. We'll bundle all your vehicles together and find the carrier that offers the best group rate for your household.
What if I have a bad driving record or accidents?
We specialize in finding coverage for all types of drivers — including those with accidents, tickets, DUIs, or lapses in coverage. High-risk doesn't mean high cost when you have the right agent shopping for you.
Do I need full coverage or just liability?
It depends on your situation. If you're financing or leasing your vehicle, your lender requires full coverage. If you own your car outright, we'll help you weigh the cost vs. risk so you can make the best decision for your budget.
What documents do I need to get a quote?
Just your name and phone number to get started. For the most accurate quote, it helps to have your driver's license number, vehicle VIN, and current policy declarations page — but none of that is required upfront.
